Comments on the 1997 "Challenge"

  1. This was the first "challenge", but in 1997 it was known as a charity event.  It was organized by John Green's "Justice on Legs" committee.
     
  2. Started at the Queen's Head on the 5th October 1997
     
  3. The week end before, John Green, supported by family and friends walked the route over two days.
     
  4. It was a charity event that raised significant amounts for Macmillan Nurses and Coventry Crossroads.
     
  5. Basil Heatley, Silver Medallist for the Marathon at the Tokyo 1964 Olympics attended the event and took part in the celebrations.
     
  6. Simon Harper and Ian Davies completed the course, setting a new record, in 7 hours 23 minutes.  Chris Stokes finished with them but had started at a slightly earlier time.  Bob Carey plus two more yet to be indentified also completed the course.
     
  7. The Octavian Droobers relay team set a target of 5 hours 40 minutes for future challengers.
     
  8. Iris and Cyril Bean completed a family walking relay of 20 miles each in 10 mile bursts in 13 hours 30 minutes.
     
  9. Ian Davies produced the famous green shirts.
