News "ACW Challenge 2012" & "ACW
Route"
Green Book Mar-2012 now printed
The "Green Book" (A Coventry Way, A 40 mile circular Walk,
18 Maps and Directions) has now been updated. Prints are
available from 1-Mar-2011.
Paper copies should be posted to registered participants for ACW
Challenge 2011 in the next few days. Plentiful supplies should
also soon be available to purchase from the Coventry Tourist
Information Centre (within the tower of St Michael's cathedral
ruins). We are considering which other outlets will now be
invited to hold stocks.
Green Book available for download
With the OS (Ordnance Survey) rules changed in April 2011, we can
now offer a download service for files covering the Green
Book.
See http://www.acoventryway.org.uk/40-Mile-Walk_Downloads.html
for details. Note the "Copyright Statement" sections.
Those preparing for ACW Challenge 2012 may care to download some
maps and directions to get themselves familiar with the route before
their Green Book arrives. If you are going out to check some
of the route on the ground, print a copy of the relevant sheets and
take them with you.
Bing ACW LARGE Scale Maps updated
The Bing based "ACW LARGE Scale Maps" have been updated with all
aspects updated in the Green Book.
Visit http://www.acoventryway.org.uk/ACW_Large-scale-maps.html
to see updated outline, and use the maps to zoom in (etc.) and
explore detail of any changes - almost as good as doing a trial
visit! Better still study the map, then visit, then let me
know what you found (especially if the maps need
updating).
Significant Changes since Mar-2010
Many of you will be aware of changes through the Challenge 2012
pages, or from the paper Newsletter, or via the grapevine! For
those who missed some, the key points are:
a. Start & Finish
For a start, the event will be operating out of the marquee at
the Queen's Head in Meriden - thanks to Caroline and Lawrence for
welcoming us back. In the early years, registration, start and
finish were located outside the front of the pub.
b. Kenilworth Common & use of new C2K path
This year our route will stay on the Kenilworth Greenway to
use the new extension across the bridge over Coventry Road then
on the new path following the old rail track, under Common Lane and
down to near Finham Brook. From there, turn left and follow
the brook to rejoin the old ACW route just before CP1.
This is for one challenge only and will be reviewed after April
2012.
c. Bubbenhall Checkpoint
This year the Bubbenhall checkpoint will return to in the car
park of the Village Hall.
d. Wolston Checkpoint
At Wolston will for the second year be in the Community Centre,
in the sports field and the first building you pass approaching the
village.
e. Other Changes
Other changes are mostly the usual "improvements" such as more
stiles replaced by kissing gates, better waymarking, improved and
clearer direction notes and similar.
